IWRM Zayandeh Rud – Iran – BMBF project – booklet – publication – Integrated Water Resources Management [08.02.2017]

Available now: IWRM Zayandeh Rud project booklet

For seven years the IWRM Zayandeh Rud project has shown the manifold ways in which sustainable water management can and needs to be implemented in Iran. The recently released, bilingual project booklet illustrates the achievements so far and goals and approaches for the coming years.

As the most important river in Central Iran the Zayandeh Rud provides drinking water for more than 4 million people. It also supplies the agricultural and industrial sectors as well as a unique and fragile ecosystem. Climate change and unsustainable use of surface and groundwater resources, however, have dried out the river and led to severe social and ecological problems.

Since 2010 the "Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Zayandeh Rud" project has supported the Iranian decision-makers in shaping an IWRM process for the region. Not least as a show case for other arid and semi-arid regions, measures in the fields of agriculture, industry, drinking water supply and capacity development have been developed and implemented. A core element of the project is the establishment of a data-based decision support system (DSS).

The project booklet just released illustrates the results that have been achieved during the first project stage (2010 to 2015) and the key aspects that are in the focus of the second project stage (2015 to 2018). The booklet is available in English and Farsi.
