Strategy workshop in Isfahan: 50 experts develop ideas for agricultural transformation

Agriculture is the biggest water using sector in the Zayandeh Rud catchment and holds considerable saving potential. Therefore a strategy for agricultural transformation is developed within the IWRM Zayandeh Rud project. This strategy is supposed to be based on recommendations jointly developed with local stakeholders. The importance of the agricultural sector and the precarious water situation require well-considered approaches for stakeholder involvement. The strategy workshop took place between the 14th and 16th of August at the Agricultural Training Center in Isfahan.

More than 50 experts from administration, academia and farms from the entire catchment gathered to develop concrete recommendations. For this workshop three participatory approaches that build upon each other were adjusted to local conditions and applied accordingly: the SWOT analysis, the TOWS analysis and the Strategic Pathway Analysis (SPA). Moderation was supported by the renowned "Women’s Society Against Environmental Pollution”.

Main questions for the SWOT and TOWS methods were: What are strengths and weaknesses of the stakeholders in the Zayandeh Rud catchment? Which framework conditions can support or hinder specific solutions? How can these factors be combined to achieve sustainable agriculture? The SPA was about concrete activities and the identification of responsible people and institutions.

In seven working groups seven topics were discussed in detail which had previously been agreed upon with agricultural experts: the development of greenhouses in the catchment, the promotion of aquaculture, the use of treated urban wastewater, the promotion of agricultural cooperatives, the development of value chains for (new) crops and the intensified use of biomass like manure.
