Is future cooperation in the field of renewable energy possible?

Iran has great potential as well as a series of strategic and entrepreneurial foundations for building up and implementing resource conservation policies. These foundations can be developed into a successful renewable energy initiative. In the planned study, inter 3 is compiling a draft paper in cooperation with the Renewable Energy Organization of Iran (SUNA). The study has been commissioned by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The draft paper aims to provide an overview of the current renewable energy situation in Iran, the institutional responsibilities and political agenda as well as the barriers to, and potential for the development of renewable energies in Iran. Further to this, the opportunities for German-Iranian cooperation in the area of renewable energy will be explored.

Objective: Information on renewable energies in Iran

The aim of the investigation is to collect information on the current situation of renewable energies in Iran. To this end, interviews will be carried out with Iranian politicians, government employees and scientists regarding the state of technologies, and the political and economic possibilities as well as restrictions. Accordingly the renewable energy potential in Iran and the main players will be identified. In addition, the current political agenda and innovation strategies for successful propagation of renewable energies in Iran will be described.

Results: German-iranian know-how and experience exchange

The collected information will provide a concrete starting point for German-Iranian cooperation and for the experience exchange in the field of renewable energy. Iran, with its vicinity to the IRENA headquarters, its geostrategic importance and its close relationship with its neighbours, can act as a multiplier and as such play a significant role in the introduction of renewable energies to the region.
