Welcoming perspectives

Sustainable urban development through urban design thinking

In view of growing cities worldwide, the sustainable transformation of urban spaces into livable and healthy living, working and living spaces is of outstanding importance. The publication presents the results of the first phase of the project "Welcome Perspectives - Migrants4Cities" in Mannheim.

The book shows why co-creation is also becoming increasingly important in urban development and how Urban Design Thinking can be used to structure and implement such co-creative work processes in the urban context that are geared to people's needs.

Urban design at eye level − the Migrants4Cities approach

It offers vivid insights into how Urban Design Thinking was used in the Migrants4Cities project, which people were involved in the work, what distinguished the work process, and what results were produced. Based on these experiences, the co-creative approach in Mannheim is reflected upon in terms of:

  •     the specifics in the application of Urban Design Thinking,
  •     the integration of such approaches into the routines of urban governance,
  •     the mobilization and involvement of migrants, and
  •     the transfer of results to other cities.

The book is open access and can be ordered directly from the publisher or downloaded for free.
