Energy and sustainability transition in polycentric municipalities

A new mission statement

How can the transition towards more sustainability in urban areas be promoted? Which resources can be drawn to? The BMBF project "Die re-produktive Stadt. Die Stadt verändern, um die Energie- und Nachhaltigkeitswende zu schaffen." is dedicated to these issues. Together with Energieavantgarde Anhalt e.V., BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, Fraunhofer-Institute for the Microstructure of Materials and Systems (IMWS), Fraunhofer Research Center for Silicon Photovoltaics CSP and the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen, inter 3 will find ways to make use of or reuse untapped resources such as green waste and secondary resources for the benefit of Bitterfeld-Wolfen and its inhabitants.

Finding potentials and developing townscapes

The overall objective of the project is the systematic improvement of the material-energetic and socio-economic re-production capacity of the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen and to develop a blueprint of a possible transformation path for a new type of towns: medium-sized, polycentric towns covering a comparably large area. In this context, inter 3 aims at identifying potentials, conditions and opportunities and developing a blueprint using specific case studies in Bitterfeld-Wolfen necessary for the transfer of results to other urban areas in Germany.

Defining success criteria and perpetuating re-use strategies

The expected results include pilot projects within the polycentric area of Bitterfeld-Wolfen. In addition, typical success criteria will be identified so that the developed re-use concepts can be transferred to other towns. Therefore, inter 3 will apply its own instruments for stakeholder analysis and innovation management such as "Konstellationsanalyse” (constellation analysis) and "Akzeptanz-Radar” (accepatance radar).
