How can regions be better prepared for crises and far-reaching changes? This is the question addressed by the ‘Resilient Regions’ initiative as part of the ‘Shaping Regions’ programme run by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction (BMWSB) in collaboration with the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR).

Building on the findings from ten pilot projects, the current funding phase is focused on further developing successful approaches to strengthening regional resilience, embedding them for the long term and rolling them out to other regions. The focus is on strategies that enable local authorities and regions to strengthen their crisis resilience in a sustainable manner and establish resilience-oriented governance structures.

Transferring knowledge, putting experience to good use

A key component of the project is the transfer of knowledge between model and transfer regions. Together, practical strategies and formats are identified, tested and adapted to different regional contexts. Workshops, exchange forums, regional consultations and specialist events create opportunities for collaborative learning and promote the sharing of tried-and-tested approaches. Furthermore, the scientific evaluation of these experiences provides important insights into how resilience processes can be permanently embedded in administration, planning and regional development.

Resilience as a challenge for the future

The project helps to connect regional stakeholders, highlight successful methods and provide practical tools for resilient regional planning and development. The insights gained are incorporated into digital tools (toolbox) and communication formats, supporting regions in proactively addressing the challenges posed by climate change, societal shifts and other crises.

Within the project, inter 3 is responsible for developing a knowledge transfer concept tailored to specific target groups, as well as for public relations work. This includes, amongst other things, identifying and developing suitable communication formats, presenting project results in a way that is tailored to specific target groups, and supporting external communication.
