The Zayandeh Rud catchment in Central Iran has been facing increasing water withdrawal, climate variability and groundwater overuse over the past years, leading to extreme water shortage, desertification and conflicts between water users, especially in the lower reaches.

To address these problems, the "Sustainable land use strategies for climate change adaptation in the lower reaches of the Zayandeh Rud River in Iran” project was implemented by inter 3 on behalf of the GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit). The aim of the project was to develop feasible, sustainable and acceptable land use approaches that support stakeholders in combating desertification and using water resources efficiently.

On May 2nd, the vulnerability study and the action plan that were developed throughout the project were solemnly handed over to the relevant authorities. The stakeholders that were involved in the project also attended the ceremony: representatives of farmers from the Roodasht region, of the agricultural, environmental and water sectors, the governor’s office and NGOs.

It was with great interest that the managing director of the Isfahan Water Company received the cross-sectoral recommendations for action as important roadmap for future sustainable development. The Iranian representatives expressed their requests for further distribution and presentation of the results at the River Basin Management Organisation and the governor’s office.
