Supply infrastructures are coupled in many ways. Some couplings only become visible through unexpected crises. The SIMKAS 3D project, which is funded by the BMBF, is researching how crisis events are perpetuated by cascading effects in the infrastructure systems. Together with the Berlin utilities and other collaborative partners, inter 3 is creating scenarios for possible disruptions to Berlin's infrastructure systems caused by such cascading effects and strategies for better crisis management.
Creating scenarios, identifying hazards, improving crisis management
Possible propagation paths - so-called cascade effects - of disruptions and crises in electricity, gas, heat and water supply as well as wastewater disposal are being investigated. The scenarios created serve as a basis for improved cross-sector crisis management in cooperation with all operators.
