Citizens contribute their ideas for the future of city districts
Commissioned by the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, inter 3 is conducting a public participation process "planning cell” in the Sparrplatz neighbourhood of Berlin Wedding. The Sparrplatz neighbourhood belongs to the 15 "regions in particular need of development” for which the Berlin Senate, with the vote of the boroughs, has decided to initiate a neighbourhood management programme.
Approach: Involving the public - planning actions
The aim of the planning cell is to draw up a public participation programme that incorporates urgent tasks and solution approaches for the further development of the neighbourhood. For this, 80 randomly selected residents took part in four four-day planning cells where ideas and suggestions were worked through, discussed and weighted according to their relevance to the neighbourhood. By tangibly involving residents in the planning cells, diverse potentials are mobilised and new solutions developed. The citizens are motivated to get involved in the planning and rehabilitation of their neighbourhood.
Results: Urban planning for residents
It is essential to run the process without preconceived outcomes. The results of the planning cells are brought together in a citizens’ report and can be obtained either from the Senate Department for Urban Development or from inter 3. The public participation process allows the neighbourhood management programme to target the wishes and needs of the residents.
