Identify and improve gender-specific recruitment criteria

Commissioned by the eco-technical women’s educational centre, Life e.V., inter 3 is compiling an empirical study on gender-specific employment criteria in craft trades. The study takes the form of qualitative interviews and a literature search. The criteria chosen by craftsmen and -women when employing female apprentices and craftswomen/journeywomen are identified and described typologically.

Practical measures for girls and young women

The objective of the study is to develop measures that will (1) improve the long-term willingness of companies to employ and integrate girls and young women, (2) improve girls’ and young women’s access to training and employment in the crafts industry. These measures will be tested as part of a larger joint project with the German Chamber of Crafts and Life e.V.

Within the study, 29 companies in total in Cologne and Berlin will be asked whether they have experiences of and with women in the crafts, and if so what these are. The results of the study suggest that there is a greater acceptance of women in the crafts industry than was expected at the beginning of the project.
